SMS (Short Message Service) opened up communications for districts and schools, providing a simple way to get our important, but not protected, information (e.g., school closed due to snow). In the last decade, companies (Remind; TalkingPoints) were created that put this powerful tool in the hands of teachers and staff. Educators marveled at the ability to reach out directly to families.
BUT…..
There were issues not well understood by districts. For example, SMS solutions do not authenticate users; they are simply sending to a phone number. Why does this matter? Because teachers and parents will often send private information (e.g., IEP questions) via these solutions. Suddenly, it does matter that the correct person receives the information. Without user authentication, however, the district is suddenly at risk.
This does not mean these solutions are bad. In fact, they provide tremendous value. However, districts and schools must understand the risks and rewards of their communications solutions.
What solutions are in use in your district?
