Earlier this week I was speaking with the Director of Communications of a medium-sized school district (10,000 students). She recently joined the district and is trying to get her arms around communications in her district. Her district has a “district app” in place, but her sense was it wasn’t being widely used.
A quick scan of school websites and other public information enabled me to confirm her suspicion: communications to parents was disjointed and unconnected to district efforts. Why is this important? When parents are being asked to use multiple methods of communication, they will default to the communication choice of their child’s teacher(s), often then ignoring district solutions. This reduces the reach and impact of district and school level communications. To reach the parents, you need to “go where they are”.
What do communications look like in your district? Do you know where your parents are?
