Recently, it was announced that PowerSchool (Holdings) is purchasing SchoolMessenger. Though this may seem like just yet another simple move in the educational technology space, it has serious implications for school districts throughout the United States.
How will this play out? Traditionally, PowerSchool purchases another technology and over the short-to-medium term integrates it into their SIS. After that, they suspend sales of that solution unless you are a PowerSchool customer.
What does this mean for SchoolMessenger customers?
SIS is PowerSchool: Nothing. You will be receiving updates about integration from PowerSchool. The question for you should be: what type of discount do I get for being a customer of both?
SIS is NOT PowerSchool: Most likely, your district will not be looking to make a change to an SIS - this is a big undertaking. So you should be exploring other communications solutions with the expectation of needing a solution for the 2024-2025 school year.
From my experience as well as that of other district leaders, it is important to start the process early so that you gain buy-in from key stakeholders.
Questions? Let me know and I’m happy to share more information about the process.
